Franklin Brevard McDowell Collection

The collection consists of correspondence (1903-1920) and literary materials (1903-1912). The correspondence includes letters from family and Miss Cornelia Shaw as well as letters written by McDowell. The letters mostly discuss Davidson College history, including the Civil War period. The literary materials are copies of articles written by McDowell on Davidson College.

Henry Alexander Chambers Reminiscences

The collection consists of a letter written to Miss Cornelia Shaw, librarian of Davidson College. The letter gives some family history and describes college life and the faculty in the 1860s. James Logan Greenlee Letters

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of letters written by Greenlee to his family discussing college life and a letter written to Greenlee from Charles Montgomery Payne, 1842-1900 (1863). In addition to the original letters, there are typescripts and a copy of the letter reporting Greenlee's death made by Mary M. Greenlee.

John Alexander Fleming Letters

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of 3 letters. Two of the letters were written in 1856 by Fleming to his uncle, J. Harvey Greenlee, and discuss college life. The third letter was written by A. M. Erwin to report Fleming's death. In addition to the manuscript letters, the collection contains typescripts of the letters.

Robert Hall Morrison, Jr. Collection

The collection consists of two letters written by Morrison. One letter, dated June 17, 1868 discusses his father's health and conditions at Davidson College. The second letter was written to Henry Louis Smith about Davidson after the Civil War. DC0225s contains related material about the Morrison family.

Robert Zenas Johnston Family Collection

Scope and Contents The bulk of the collection concerns Robert Zenas Johnston (1834-1908) and includes school notebooks from Davidson College and Columbia Theological Seminary, student essays, correspondence, his sermons (1859-1907) and speeches, and a photocopy of his diary (1886-1908) as well as a small amount of financial and printed materials. There is also material on the estates of Rufus Johnston and Robert Caldwell, family correspondence, a copy of a scrapbook for James Davidson Johnston, (1915-1944),...

Samuel Reece Neel Notebook

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of Neel's student notebook which later became his diary. The notebooks contains notes from D.H. Hill's mathematics class, an account of textbooks purchased by Price, a list of his classmates and their class standings, a diary of his Civil War experience, 1861-1865, a diary of his teaching at Cool Springs Academy, 1866-1868, and a diary of his teaching at Bethel Academy, 1869. The school diary portions include lists of students and expense accounts.

William Alexander Smith Reminiscences
